Trump-Putin meeting had a declarative character: Suren Sargsyan

The meeting of the presidents of the United States and Russia in Helsinki was more declaratory than an informative. Political scientist Suren Sargsyan adds that they have not reached a general agreement on any issue. “Basically, nothing has happened. I said before the meeting that I had no expectations. The settlement of the Ukrainian and Syrian crises is in the national interests of Russia. It is now clear that no one can discuss the status of the Crimea with Putin, as this raises issues regarding Russia’s territorial integrity. This matter is closed to Russia. Let’s put it aside,” Sargsyan says.

The second core issue is about the settlement of the Syrian crisis, where, according to the expert, Russia and the United States have different views, even with respect to the terrorist groups. “One believes that this is a terrorist group, the other doesn’t, one is convinced that Assad must leave, while the other is not, so positions differ here,” Suren Sargsyan notes.
