What opportunities does the agreement with the European Union offer to Armenia? Stepan Grigoryan's commentary
After signing the Comprehensive and Enhanced partnership agreement between the EU and Armenia, Russia will treat Armenia with more respect. Stepan Grigoryan, director of the “Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional Cooperation” NGO, adds that there are alternative points in this agreement. “Russia is a very interesting country. The Russian elite respects you when you have a choice. For example, the Russian-Georgian strained relations: you cannot imagine how serious the respect for the Georgian elite is. Georgia has proved that it is able to create an effective state without Russia,” the political scientist underlines.
Stepan Grigoryan is convinced that the agreement with the European Union is not targeted against Russia, but it can make Russia respect Armenia. “This agreement allows 'both, and’ policy… Though we are not yet in a symmetric situation, this allows us to return a bit to this policy,” says Stepan Grigoryan.
